Sugarcane juice, a popular summer beverage in India, has long been praised for its refreshing taste and natural health benefits. However, experts caution that its high sugar content makes it unsuitable for individuals with diabetes.

According to health professionals, sugarcane juice contains sucrose, the same type of sugar found in table sugar, which can cause rapid spikes in blood glucose levels. While the drink is rich in antioxidants, potassium, and electrolytes, its carbohydrate-heavy composition poses risks for those managing diabetes.

Some studies suggest that polyphenol antioxidants in sugarcane extract may help pancreas cells produce more insulin, but experts emphasize that this research is preliminary and does not justify its consumption by diabetes patients. Instead, doctors recommend unsweetened herbal teas, infused water, and seltzer water as safer alternatives for hydration.

Despite claims that sugarcane juice is an all-natural beverage, its glycemic index score of 43 indicates that it can still contribute to blood sugar fluctuations. Health professionals advise individuals with diabetes to monitor their body’s glycemic response before consuming any sugary drinks.

As summer approaches, experts urge diabetes patients to opt for low-calorie, sugar-free beverages to maintain stable blood sugar levels and overall health.
