Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a scathing attack on the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government during a campaign rally in Nilambur, Kerala, ahead of the upcoming Assembly bypoll. Addressing a large crowd, she emphasized the need to elect leaders who prioritize development, dignity, and accountability.

“We Need to Speak for Development, Not Division”

In her address, Priyanka urged voters to rise above political polarization and focus on electing “decent, courageous people” who work for the upliftment of society.

“Especially today, when there is so much anger and divisiveness being spread, we need to speak for peace and development,” she said.

ASHA Workers’ Plight in the Spotlight

Highlighting the struggles of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA), Priyanka said their roles have evolved from voluntary service to 24/7 frontline healthcare work, especially during the pandemic.

“They deserve recognition, fair honorariums, and retirement benefits. Their work never stops, yet they remain underappreciated,” she noted.

Welfare Pension Politicization Criticized

Priyanka also condemned the alleged politicization of the ₹1,600 monthly welfare pension, which supports over 62 lakh beneficiaries in Kerala.

“This pension must be disbursed on time—not when it suits the government or during elections. People depend on it for survival,” she asserted.

Human-Animal Conflict and Governance Accountability

Referring to recent tragedies—including the electrocution of a teenager and tiger attacks—Priyanka criticized the state’s failure to prevent such incidents. She dismissed the LDF’s blame on outdated wildlife laws, stating:

“There’s no point blaming old laws. It’s the government’s duty to protect lives and livelihoods”.

Congress Pushes for Change in Nilambur

Priyanka’s visit is seen as a major boost for UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath, with the Congress aiming to reclaim the Nilambur seat. She was joined by senior leaders including K.C. Venugopal, V.D. Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala.
