The proposal to install a statue of former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao in New Delhi has received a green signal from the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC), marking a significant step toward honoring the late leader’s legacy. However, the final approval from the Central Government is still awaited.
Statue Location & Approval Process
The statue is proposed to be installed at Telangana Bhavan, a site that represents Rao’s deep connection to the state. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) forwarded the proposal, which was approved by the DUAC during a meeting on March 27, 2025.
The commission also recommended repairing broken pavements around the proposed site and installing suitable lighting to ensure visibility at night.
Political & Historical Significance
Rao, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996, was instrumental in economic liberalization and played a crucial role in shaping India’s modern financial policies. His tenure also witnessed the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992, making him a pivotal figure in India’s political history.
If the Centre grants approval, this would be the third major honor bestowed upon Rao by the BJP-led NDA government. In 2015, the Union government approved a memorial for Rao at Ekta Sthal in the Rajghat Complex, and in February 2024, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.
Awaiting Final Clearance
While the proposal has cleared the advisory body, officials from Telangana Bhavan and NDMC have stated that the final decision rests with the Centre. Sources indicate that the P. V. Narasimha Rao Memorial Foundation had initially requested the installation of a bronze statue adjacent to the statue of Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
The Centre’s decision on the matter is expected in the coming weeks, with Rao’s birth anniversary on June 28 serving as a potential milestone for the statue’s unveiling.
