Lionel Messi’s India Visit Cancelled as Organizers Fail to Raise ₹100 Crore

Football fans in India have been left disappointed as Lionel Messi’s highly anticipated visit has been cancelled due to financial constraints. The organizers failed to raise the ₹100 crore required to host the Argentina national team for two international friendlies in Kerala.

Why Was Messi’s Visit Cancelled?

  • Funding Shortfall: The event required ₹100 crore, with ₹70 crore earmarked as Argentina’s appearance fee.
  • Missed Deadline: Organizers failed to meet financial commitments before the confirmation deadline, forcing cancellation.
  • Alternative Plans: Argentina will now play two matches in China and one each in Angola and Qatar instead.

Initial Hopes & Sponsorship Struggles

The Kerala government had initially announced Messi’s visit, with sponsorship granted to the All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association (AKGSMA). However, their fundraising campaign on the ‘Oloppo’ app failed, leading to sponsorship being transferred to Reporter Broadcasting Company Pvt Ltd.

Messi’s Previous Visit to India

Messi last played in India in September 2011, when Argentina faced Venezuela in Kolkata, securing a 1-0 victory with Messi assisting Nicolás Otamendi’s goal.

Despite the setback, Indian football fans remain hopeful that Messi will visit in the future.
