AI-171 Crash: Black Box Data Retrieved, DG AAIB Leads High-Level Probe

In a major development in the investigation into the Air India Flight AI-171 crash, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has successfully downloaded data from the aircraft’s black boxes, the Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed on June 26. The probe is being led by AAIB Director General GVG Yugandhar, with support from a multidisciplinary team including experts from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Timeline of Recovery and Analysis

  • June 12: AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed into a medical hostel complex in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff, killing over 270 people, including 241 onboard.
  • June 13 & 16: The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) were recovered from the crash site.
  • June 24: Both devices were transported under high security to the AAIB Lab in Delhi.
  • June 25: The Crash Protection Module (CPM) from the front black box was accessed, and its memory module successfully downloaded.

What’s Next?

The analysis of CVR and FDR data is underway, aiming to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify contributing factors. The investigation is being conducted in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 and India’s Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2017.

“All actions have been taken in full compliance with domestic laws and international obligations,” the ministry stated, emphasizing transparency and time-bound execution.

The AAIB’s findings will be crucial in shaping future aviation safety protocols and preventing similar tragedies.
