All India Mahila Congress Demands Apology from Assam CM Over “Misogynistic” Remarks

The All India Mahila Congress has strongly condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his controversial remarks about women during the Congress regime. The comments, which implied that women had to compromise their chastity to secure government jobs, have sparked outrage across the political spectrum.

In a statement, the Mahila Congress described Sarma’s remarks as “deeply misogynistic” and an affront to the dignity of women. The organization has demanded an immediate public apology from the Chief Minister, warning of legal action if he fails to comply. Protests led by the Mahila Congress have erupted in Guwahati, with demonstrators burning effigies of Sarma and calling for accountability.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupen Kumar Borah also criticized Sarma’s comments, questioning his moral accountability during his tenure as a minister in the Congress government. Borah stated, “These remarks are not only defamatory but also disrespectful to the countless women who have earned their positions through hard work and merit.”

Sarma, however, defended his statement, claiming it was based on findings from the Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma Commission report on irregularities in government recruitment during the Congress era. He urged critics to address their concerns to the commission rather than him.

The incident has reignited debates about gender sensitivity in Indian politics, with calls for leaders to uphold values of equality and respect. The Mahila Congress has vowed to continue its protests until Sarma issues a formal apology.
