Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has urged the National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL) to boost the export of Tripura’s aromatic rice, as part of an ambitious ₹2 lakh crore export target for India’s cooperative sector.
Chairing a high-level review meeting, Shah directed NCEL to explore new global markets for aromatic rice, alongside other key agricultural products such as organic cotton, coarse grains, and fresh vegetables for Gulf countries. He also recommended establishing NCEL offices in Africa and Myanmar to facilitate pulses imports.
NCEL, formed under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, reported a ₹4,283 crore turnover with a ₹122 crore net profit in FY 2024-25. The organization has expanded exports to 28 countries and signed agreements with 61 importers from Senegal, Indonesia, and Nepal.
Shah emphasized that Tripura’s aromatic rice has significant export potential and could contribute to India’s growing presence in international markets. He also set a ₹300 crore turnover target for the National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL), which markets products under the “Bharat Organics” brand.
The minister further stressed the importance of developing high-yielding crop varieties with low water requirements, particularly for sugarcane, tur, urad, and maize. He urged the Indian Seed Cooperative Society Limited (BBSSL) to focus on tissue culture facilities to enhance banana production and improve seed varieties for processing crops like potatoes for French fries.
With these directives, Shah aims to strengthen India’s cooperative export ecosystem, ensuring greater profitability and global reach for Indian agricultural products.
