Assam Panchayat Polls Phase 1 Records 70.2% Turnout; BJP-Led NDA Secures 325 Seats Unopposed

Guwahati – The first phase of the Assam Panchayat Elections 2025 witnessed a 70.2% voter turnout across 14 districts, with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) securing 325 seats unopposed.

Polling took place on May 3 at 12,916 booths, with 89.59 lakh eligible voters participating in the democratic exercise. Voting commenced at 7:30 AM and concluded at 4:30 PM, though those already inside polling stations were allowed to cast their votes late into the night.

While the elections were largely peaceful, sporadic incidents of violence were reported in Cachar district. The highest voter turnout was recorded in Majuli (80.02%), while Sonitpur saw the lowest at 61%.

The State Election Commission confirmed that 348 Zila Parishad and Anchalik Parishad seats were decided uncontested, with the BJP-led NDA winning 325 of them. The second phase of polling is scheduled for May 7, with vote counting set for May 11.

Assam’s three-tier panchayat elections are being conducted across 28 districts, while the remaining seven districts fall under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, governed by autonomous councils.
