The Bangladesh High Court has granted bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), in a sedition case that had sparked widespread debate.
Das was arrested on November 25, 2024, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, in connection with a sedition case filed in Chattogram. His detention led to concerns among Bangladesh’s minority Hindu community, which has faced increasing challenges since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in August 2024.
His lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, argued before the court that Das was suffering in jail without trial and urged the bench to grant bail on humanitarian grounds. The court’s decision comes after months of appeals and growing pressure from human rights groups advocating for fair treatment of religious minorities in Bangladesh.
Das, who has been a vocal advocate for Hindu rights, previously served as a spokesperson for ISKCON and has consistently raised concerns over the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh. He has also been associated with the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatan Jagaran Jote, a group working to protect Hindu interests in the country.
The bail ruling is expected to have significant implications for minority rights activism in Bangladesh, as Das had earlier demanded that the interim government take strong action against fundamentalist groups responsible for attacks on Hindu communities.
