Delhi Capitals pacer Mukesh Kumar has been fined 10% of his match fees for breaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct during his team’s 59-run loss to Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the penalty, citing a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2, which pertains to the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, or ground fixtures during a match.
Mukesh Kumar’s Offence and Penalty
Mukesh Kumar’s frustration was evident during the death overs, where he conceded 48 runs in four overs, including a costly 27-run 19th over that allowed MI to push their total to 180/5. His reaction, which involved abusing cricket equipment, led to the match referee Daniel Manohar imposing the fine and handing him one demerit point.
The IPL release stated:
“Mukesh Kumar admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.”
Delhi Capitals’ Struggles and Playoff Exit
Mukesh Kumar’s penalty adds to Delhi Capitals’ woes, as their loss to Mumbai Indians officially ended their playoff hopes. Despite a strong bowling effort from Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam, DC’s batting lineup collapsed for 121 in 18.2 overs, unable to chase MI’s total.
What’s Next for Mukesh Kumar and Delhi Capitals?
With Delhi Capitals set to play their final match against Punjab Kings on May 24, Mukesh Kumar will look to end the season on a positive note. Meanwhile, the BCCI’s disciplinary action serves as a reminder of the league’s strict stance on maintaining sportsmanship and professionalism.
