In a historic leap toward energy self-sufficiency, Bihar is set to receive its first-ever nuclear power plant, as part of the Centre’s ambitious rollout of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) under the Nuclear Energy Mission 2025–26. The announcement was made by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar during the Eastern Region Power Ministers’ Conference held in Patna.
SMRs: A Game-Changer for Clean, Scalable Energy
The upcoming plant will be based on SMR technology, a next-generation nuclear solution known for its compact design, enhanced safety, and cost-efficiency. Unlike traditional reactors, SMRs can be deployed in smaller grids and are ideal for regions with moderate power demand—making them a perfect fit for Bihar’s evolving energy landscape.
“If the Bihar government sets up a nuclear power plant, the Central Government is fully prepared to provide support,” said Khattar, confirming the Centre’s approval of the state’s proposal.
Strategic and Economic Impact
The project is expected to:
- Stabilize Bihar’s electricity supply, reducing dependence on thermal and hydropower.
- Attract technological investments and boost industrial growth.
- Create thousands of jobs in construction, operations, and allied sectors.
- Support India’s clean energy transition and reduce carbon emissions.
Alongside the nuclear plant, the Centre has also approved a 1,000 MW battery storage project in Bihar to enhance grid stability and renewable energy integration.
A Vision for 2035 and Beyond
The SMR initiative is part of a broader Power Vision 2035, which includes thermal, solar, wind, storage, and nuclear energy projects. The government aims to establish at least one nuclear plant in every state, ensuring long-term energy security and sustainability.
