Kolkata, June 17, 2025: The West Bengal Legislative Assembly witnessed high drama on Monday as BJP legislators staged a walkout protesting the Speaker’s refusal to admit an adjournment motion on the state’s education crisis, particularly the fallout from the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam.
Adjournment Motion Rejected, Tensions Escalate
The BJP had sought a detailed discussion on the Supreme Court’s cancellation of nearly 26,000 school jobs due to alleged irregularities in the recruitment process. Speaker Biman Banerjee declined the motion, citing the matter as sub judice, prompting BJP MLAs to erupt in protest and walk out of the House.
BJP MLA Suspended, Opposition Cries Foul
Amid the uproar, BJP MLA Manoj Oraon was suspended for the day for “improper conduct” during Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s address. BJP Chief Whip Sankar Ghosh was also cautioned. The opposition accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of silencing dissent and suppressing debate on critical issues.
“All we wanted was a threadbare discussion on the unprecedented crisis in the education sector. So many eligible teachers have been rendered unemployed,” said BJP MLA Dipak Barman.
Protests Outside Assembly, Tulsi Plant Symbolism
Following the walkout, BJP MLAs staged a symbolic protest outside the Assembly, placing a Tulsi plant at the foot of the main staircase to represent “moral purity and resistance” against alleged corruption.
CM Mamata Banerjee Defends Government, Slams BJP
During Question Hour, CM Banerjee defended her government’s employment record and accused the BJP of targeting Bengali-speaking migrants in other states. She also criticized the opposition for spreading misinformation via social media and “godi media” platforms.
Background: SSC Scam and Public Outrage
The controversy stems from the SSC recruitment scam, which has led to widespread protests by jobless teachers and terminated candidates. Many are demanding reinstatement without a fresh recruitment process, while the government has opened new applications from June 16 to July 14.
