Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has been slapped with a four-match suspension by FIFA following a dramatic altercation with a security guard during Boca Juniors’ fiery 2–2 draw against Benfica in the FIFA Club World Cup group stage.

🔴 Red Card Mayhem: Three Players Sent Off

The match at Hard Rock Stadium saw tempers flare as three red cards were issued. Herrera, who had already been substituted due to injury in the 20th minute, was shown a red card just before halftime after attempting to confront the referee during a VAR review. Security intervened, leading to a scuffle that resulted in his dismissal.

Boca’s Nicolas Figal was also sent off in the 88th minute for a reckless foul, while Benfica’s Andrea Belotti received a red card for a dangerous high boot to the head of Ayrton Costa.

⚖️ FIFA Sanctions and Boca’s Appeal

Both Herrera and Figal have received four-match bans, sidelining them until the semi-final stage, should Boca progress. Boca Juniors have confirmed they are appealing the suspensions, particularly questioning why Belotti received only a two-match ban for a more dangerous challenge.

🗣️ Club Reaction and Tournament Implications

A Boca spokesperson stated,

“We have already contacted FIFA to submit an appeal. We believe the sanctions are disproportionate.”

The draw leaves Boca and Benfica trailing Group C leaders Bayern Munich, who thrashed Auckland City 10–0. Boca must now regroup ahead of crucial fixtures against Bayern and Auckland City.
