Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has found himself at the center of controversy after his remarks on the India-Pakistan conflict, prompting the party to publicly distance itself from his statements. Congress insiders claim that Tharoor has “crossed the Lakshman Rekha”, signaling internal discontent over his stance on Operation Sindoor and ceasefire negotiations.

Congress Leadership’s Response

During a closed-door Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, top leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K.C. Venugopal, and Jairam Ramesh, reportedly conveyed a “clear message” that individual opinions should not overshadow the party’s official stance.

Congress communications head Jairam Ramesh clarified:

“That is his opinion. When Tharoor speaks, it does not reflect the views of the party.”

Tharoor Defends His Position

Tharoor, however, stood by his remarks, stating that he spoke “solely as an Indian” and not as a Congress representative. He emphasized that his comments were meant to contribute to the national discourse, particularly in international forums where India’s perspective needed amplification.

Political Fallout & Future Implications

The controversy has sparked debate within Congress, with some leaders urging discipline in messaging, while others acknowledge Tharoor’s independent approach. Analysts believe this episode could impact Tharoor’s standing within the party, especially ahead of key elections.
