England’s Mark Wood Eyes Comeback for Fifth Test Against India at The Oval

Nothing 47 7

In a major boost for England’s pace attack, Mark Wood has revealed he is targeting a return for the fifth and final Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against India. The express pacer, who underwent knee surgery in March following a medial ligament injury during the 2025 Champions Trophy, has officially resumed light bowling and is on the comeback trail.

“I’ve just started bowling very lightly, so I’m officially on the comeback trail now,” Wood told BBC Test Match Special. “I’m still targeting probably the last Test… that’s still my focus.”

🏏 Fifth Test at The Oval in Sight

  • Target Match: 5th Test at Kennington Oval, London (July 31–August 4)
  • Current Status: Light bowling underway, rehab progressing steadily
  • Fitness Proving Ground: Expected to play for Durham vs Somerset in County Championship (from July 22)

Wood’s return could be pivotal for England, who are currently trailing after India’s dominant Day 1 performance at Headingley, where Shubman Gill (127)* and Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) powered India to 359/3.

🩺 England’s Injury Woes

England’s bowling unit has been plagued by injuries:

  • Jofra Archer (thumb) and Gus Atkinson (hamstring) missed the first Test
  • Chris Woakes, recently back from injury, looked off-color on Day 1
  • Ben Stokes and Brydon Carse were the only wicket-takers

Wood’s pace and experience could provide the much-needed edge in the final showdown at The Oval.
