Introduction

Nandu, a majestic tiger residing at the Thrissur zoo, was recently euthanised after a severe battle with cancer. The decision to end the big cat’s life came after medical professionals determined that the illness had progressed to a stage where recovery was impossible and the animal was suffering immensely.

The Health Decline

Wildlife caretakers and veterinary staff at the facility noticed a significant shift in Nandu’s health and daily behavior. The most alarming sign was the tiger’s complete inability to consume food properly. As a magnificent predator, losing the capacity to eat signaled a profound deterioration in the animal’s physical condition.

Medical Assessments

Following the concerning symptoms, a team of specialized veterinarians conducted thorough medical examinations on Nandu. The tests confirmed the presence of cancer within the tiger’s body. The aggressive nature of the disease meant that medical treatments could only offer palliative care rather than a genuine cure.

Difficult Decision

Faced with the grim reality of the diagnosis and the worsening condition of the animal, the zoo authorities and medical board deliberated extensively. Euthanasia is always a last resort in wildlife management, but it was deemed the most humane option to spare Nandu from prolonged agony and starvation.

Legacy at the Zoo

Nandu had been a prominent resident at the Thrissur zoo, drawing visitors who admired the beauty and power of the species. The passing of the tiger marks a somber moment for the zookeepers and staff who dedicated years to looking after the animal’s daily needs and overall welfare.
