India is rapidly emerging as a global AI compute hub, with Yotta Data Services claiming that the country now offers GPU-based compute at nearly one-fifth the global market price. The announcement comes as part of the IndiaAI Mission, a government-backed initiative to democratize access to high-performance computing for startups, academia, and enterprises.
⚙️ Compute at ₹100/Hour: A Game-Changer for AI Development
According to Yotta and official sources:
- AI model computation in India now costs less than ₹100/hour after a 40% government subsidy
- Global compute rates typically range from $2.5 to $3/hour, making India’s offering up to 80% cheaper
- Half-yearly and annual plans will further reduce costs for long-term users
“This is the lowest GPU usage rate in the world,” said a senior official from the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY)
🧠 Yotta to Power 50% of India’s AI GPU Capacity
Under the IndiaAI Mission:
- Yotta will supply over 9,200 GPUs, including Nvidia H100 and H200 units, through its Shakti Cloud platform
- The company is responsible for 50% of the total 18,693 GPUs earmarked for the mission
- Compute access is granted via a unified government portal, with API integration enabling instant provisioning upon approval
Other empaneled providers include E2E Networks and NxtGen, with India collectively offering over 11,600 GPUs at subsidized rates
🌍 India’s AI Ambition: Sovereign Cloud and Global Competitiveness
Yotta’s CEO Sunil Gupta emphasized that India’s sovereign cloud infrastructure is designed to:
- Bridge the compute gap for foundational AI models
- Reduce dependence on foreign cloud providers
- Empower domestic innovation in AI, LLMs, and data science
The initiative is also seen as a strategic response to global chip shortages and export restrictions on advanced GPUs by countries like the US.
