India has formally approached Russia to procure additional S-400 air defence missile systems, following the successful deployment of the platform during Operation Sindoor. The move comes amid rising border tensions, with India seeking to bolster its aerial defence capabilities.
Strategic Importance of the S-400 System
The S-400 Triumf, known in India as Sudarshan Chakra, is one of the most advanced air defence systems globally. It can track targets up to 600 km away and intercept threats at ranges of up to 400 km. The system played a critical role in neutralizing Pakistani missiles and drones during recent conflicts.
India’s Existing S-400 Fleet & Expansion Plans
India had signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia in 2018 to acquire five S-400 units, with three already delivered and two pending. Encouraged by its combat effectiveness, India is now seeking additional units to further strengthen its multi-layered air defence network.
