Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has projected that India will transition from an energy importer to a net energy exporter within the next six to seven years, driven by a strategic shift toward alternative fuels, clean energy technologies, and logistics cost optimization.
Speaking at the ET Edge Supply Chain Summit 2025, Gadkari emphasized that India’s energy roadmap is aligned with its $5 trillion economy vision, and that the country is rapidly building the infrastructure and policy ecosystem to support this transformation.
⚡ Key Drivers of India’s Energy Export Ambition
- Alternative Fuels Push: The government is aggressively promoting ethanol, biodiesel, electric vehicles (EVs), and green hydrogen as part of its clean energy transition
- Hydrogen as Future Fuel: Gadkari reiterated that hydrogen is the fuel of the future, with pilot projects worth ₹600 crore already underway
- Logistics Cost Reduction: India’s logistics cost has dropped from 16% to 10% of GDP, with a target of 9% by year-end, enhancing export competitiveness
- Infrastructure Expansion: National highways, multimodal logistics parks, and deep-draft ports like Wadhwan are being developed to support energy and goods movement
“Today we are importers of energy, but within six to seven years, we will be exporters,” Gadkari declared, citing the success of clean fuel adoption and infrastructure upgrades.
🌍 Global Context and Strategic Impact
India aims to join the ranks of energy-exporting nations such as the U.S., Russia, and Saudi Arabia, leveraging its growing capacity in biofuels, hydrogen, and EV manufacturing. The shift is expected to:
- Reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports
- Boost rural and industrial economies through biofuel production
- Enhance India’s geopolitical leverage in global energy markets
🔁 Policy and Industry Response
The announcement has been welcomed by stakeholders in the automotive, renewable energy, and logistics sectors, who see it as a signal for accelerated investment and innovation. The government is also encouraging public-private partnerships to scale up clean energy infrastructure.
