In a major milestone for India’s tech industry, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the country’s first homegrown semiconductor chip will be rolled out in 2025.

Speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Annual Business Summit, Vaishnaw revealed that six fabrication units are currently under construction, marking a significant step in India’s ambition to become a global semiconductor hub.

The Made-in-India chip, ranging between 28 to 90 nanometres, is expected to cater to 60% of global semiconductor demand, with applications in automotive, telecommunications, power equipment, and railway systems.

Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of balancing manufacturing and services, stating that India must focus on creating its own intellectual property, products, designs, and standards to strengthen its semiconductor ecosystem.

The announcement comes amid India’s Semiconductor Mission, launched in 2021, which aims to boost domestic chip production and reduce reliance on imports.
