In a landmark moment for Indo-Russian defence cooperation, the Indian Navy is set to commission its latest stealth multi-role frigate, INS Tamal, on July 1, 2025, at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia. The ceremony will be presided over by Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, alongside senior Indian and Russian defence officials.
🚢 INS Tamal: A Technological Powerhouse
INS Tamal is the eighth Krivak-class frigate to be inducted from Russia and the second vessel of the upgraded Tushil class, following the commissioning of INS Tushil in 2024. The 3,900-tonne warship boasts 26% indigenous components, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, and is equipped with:
- Vertical Launch Surface-to-Air Missiles (VL-SAMs)
- Upgraded 100mm naval gun
- Heavyweight torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets
- Advanced electronic warfare and surveillance systems
- Network-centric warfare capabilities
- Top speed exceeding 30 knots
The ship’s design integrates stealth features and enhanced stability, developed jointly by the Indian Navy and Russia’s Severnoye Design Bureau.
🇮🇳 Symbol of Indo-Russian Naval Partnership
INS Tamal is the last warship to be inducted from a foreign shipyard, aligning with India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. Two additional frigates of the same class—dubbed the Triput class—are under construction at Goa Shipyard Limited with Russian design assistance.
The ship’s name, Tamal, symbolizes the mythical sword of Indra, the King of the Gods. Its mascot, The Great Bear, draws inspiration from both Jambavant of Indian mythology and the Eurasian brown bear, Russia’s national animal.
🧭 Deployment and Strategic Role
Following commissioning, INS Tamal will sail to India’s west coast and join the Mumbai-based Western Fleet by September 2025. With its formidable firepower and endurance, the frigate is expected to play a pivotal role in blue-water operations and maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.
