India’s ambitious bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics has hit a temporary pause after newly elected International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry announced a comprehensive review of the host city selection process. The move, aimed at increasing transparency and inclusivity, has delayed the timeline for awarding the Games, which was earlier expected by 2026.

🏛️ IOC Resets Host Selection Framework

In her first executive board meeting as IOC President, Coventry—an Olympic gold medalist and the first woman and African to lead the IOC—said there was “overwhelming support” among members to pause and reassess the bidding process.

“Members want to be more engaged in the process, and there was a big discussion on when the next host should be awarded,” Coventry stated.

A working group will now be formed to determine the “appropriate time” and method for selecting future Olympic hosts, taking into account lessons from upcoming Games in Los Angeles (2028), Brisbane (2032), and the French Alps (2030 Winter Games).

🇮🇳 India’s Bid Still Active, Delegation to Proceed

Despite the pause, Coventry confirmed that a high-level Indian delegation led by Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao will visit the IOC headquarters in Lausanne next month for informal talks. India had submitted a Letter of Intent in October 2024, with Ahmedabad proposed as the host city, backed by the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave.

The bid has received strong support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and IOC member Nita Ambani, who have positioned the Games as a catalyst for national development and global sporting recognition.

🌍 Focus on Global South Representation

Coventry also emphasized the need to diversify Olympic host cities, noting that the Global South—including Africa, South Asia, and Latin America—has been underrepresented in past selections.

“My job is to ensure policies are in place to allow anyone with the ability to host the Games,” she said, hinting at a more inclusive future for Olympic hosting.

  • Timeline Uncertain: Decision on 2036 host may now extend beyond 2026
