The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new rule for the remainder of IPL 2025, allowing franchises to sign temporary replacement players following the tournament’s mid-season suspension due to India-Pakistan tensions.
Key Changes in IPL 2025 Replacement Rules
- Temporary replacements allowed: Teams can now sign replacement players for those unavailable due to national commitments, personal reasons, injuries, or illness.
- Retention restrictions: Players signed as replacements after the suspension will not be eligible for retention in IPL 2026 and must enter the next player auction.
- Exception for early replacements: Players who were signed as replacements before the suspension will still be eligible for retention in IPL 2026.
Impact on IPL Teams
The rule change has created challenges for all 10 franchises, as several overseas players have withdrawn from the tournament due to scheduling conflicts. For instance, Delhi Capitals (DC) replaced Jake Fraser-McGurk with Mustafizur Rahman, while Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost Jamie Overton.
With the IPL 2025 resumption scheduled for May 17, teams are now scrambling to adjust their squads and strategize for the playoffs, as no team has secured a playoff berth yet.
