The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has penalized Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Varun Chakravarthy, imposing a 25% fine on his match fees and awarding him one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during KKR’s match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Eden Gardens.
Incident Leading to the Penalty
The disciplinary action stems from Chakravarthy’s pointed send-off to CSK batter Dewald Brevis, who had played a crucial knock of 52 off 25 balls before being dismissed. The spinner’s reaction was deemed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.5, which pertains to language, actions, or gestures that disparage or provoke an aggressive reaction from another player.
Chakravarthy admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction, making the decision final and binding.
Impact on KKR’s Campaign
KKR, who were already struggling in the IPL 2025 playoff race, suffered a two-wicket defeat against CSK in the match, further denting their qualification hopes. The team now sits at 11 points from 12 matches, with their next fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 10.
As the tournament progresses, KKR will need to regroup and focus on their remaining matches, ensuring discipline on and off the field.
