Karnataka Congress Faces Internal Strain as Minister Flags ‘Multiple Power Centres’

Nothing 96 1

Karnataka Cooperation Minister K.N. Rajanna has stirred political waters by publicly acknowledging the rise of “many power centres” within the state’s ruling Congress party, a stark contrast to the centralized leadership seen during Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s 2013–2018 tenure.

“Siddaramaiah Not the Same as Before,” Says Rajanna

Speaking to reporters on June 26, Rajanna remarked that the current Congress setup is marked by increased internal friction, with multiple factions vying for influence.

“Between 2013 and 2018, there was just one power centre. Today, there are one, two, three… many,” he said, without naming individuals.

He added that this shift has made governance more complex, requiring Siddaramaiah to balance party dynamics and administrative responsibilities more delicately than before.

Political Developments Expected Post-September

Rajanna also hinted at significant political changes after September, fueling speculation about a possible cabinet reshuffle or even a leadership transition, especially amid ongoing murmurs of a power-sharing agreement between Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar.

Internal Dissent and Leadership Challenges

The remarks come amid growing discontent within the party. Several Congress MLAs have criticized the government over lack of development funds, delays in project execution, and alleged corruption. Some leaders have even questioned Siddaramaiah’s grip on the administration, suggesting he no longer commands the same authority.

Rajanna’s comments follow his controversial absence from a key Apex Bank meeting in March, which was seen as a sign of strained ties with Shivakumar, who also heads the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

High Command’s Tightrope Walk

While the Congress high command has so far discouraged leadership change talks, the latest developments may force a recalibration of internal strategy to maintain unity ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
