Mamata Banerjee Expresses Concern Over Detained BSF Jawan, Urges Swift Action

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has voiced concern over the detention of BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Sahu, who was apprehended by Pakistan Rangers after inadvertently crossing the International Border near Firozpur, Punjab on April 23.

Speaking on Monday, Banerjee stated that Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee is in touch with Sahu’s family and assured them of full support. “This is an extremely sad situation. We want him to be rescued as soon as possible. Our party stands with the government on matters of internal and external security,” she said.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has issued a strict advisory to jawans, instructing them to remain extra vigilant during border patrols. A senior BSF officer confirmed that while such incidents are common along the Punjab border, Pakistan has refused to participate in a flag meeting to resolve the matter.

The detention comes amid heightened India-Pakistan tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. Officials believe Pakistan’s reluctance to engage in diplomatic discussions is linked to the ongoing security situation.

An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances under which Sahu crossed the border. The BSF has lodged a formal protest with Pakistan Rangers and is making all efforts to secure his release.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
