West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called on the Union Government to take peaceful diplomatic initiatives to help de-escalate the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, which has seen a surge in missile and drone exchanges in recent weeks. Speaking during a legislative session on environmental issues, Banerjee expressed concern over the global impact of warfare, particularly its contribution to air and water pollution.

A Call for Global Peace and Environmental Responsibility

“War has broken out in many parts of the world. Such things cause air and water pollution. We have to take steps to stop this,” Banerjee said, urging the Centre to act in line with India’s historic role in global peace efforts.

While acknowledging that foreign policy is under the purview of the central government, she emphasized that her appeal stems from her role as a concerned global citizen, not as a policymaker in external affairs.

Remembering India’s Diplomatic Legacy

Banerjee recalled India’s leadership in the Non-Aligned Movement and its early recognition of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), highlighting the country’s tradition of promoting peace and neutrality in global conflicts.

Broader Context and Domestic Concerns

Her remarks come amid heightened Middle East tensions and follow the U.S. bombing of key Iranian nuclear sites, which further intensified hostilities. Banerjee also used the platform to criticize the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for inadequate flood management in West Bengal, linking environmental degradation to both global conflict and domestic negligence.
