Bangladesh pacer Nahid Rana has officially withdrawn from the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, citing security concerns. His decision comes just days before the team’s scheduled departure for Lahore, where they are set to play a three-match series on May 28, 30, and 31.
Security Concerns Behind Rana’s Exit
Rana’s withdrawal follows a tense episode during the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he and several overseas players, including Rishad Hossain, had to urgently exit Pakistan due to escalating border tensions between India and Pakistan. The experience appears to have left a lasting impact, leading Rana to opt out of the tour.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that fielding coach James Pamment and strength and conditioning coach Nathan Keily have also pulled out of the tour, further highlighting concerns over security.
BCB’s Response and Pakistan’s Security Assurances
BCB’s cricket operations chairman, Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, acknowledged the situation, stating that Rana’s decision is understandable given the circumstances. He emphasized that Pakistan provides the highest level of security for touring teams, with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi personally assuring Bangladesh of top-tier protection.
Despite initial hesitations from other players, the majority of the squad has decided to proceed with the tour, reassured by the security measures in place.
Revised Schedule for Bangladesh’s Pakistan Tour
The series, originally planned as a five-match affair, has now been reduced to three matches due to scheduling constraints. The revised fixtures are as follows:
- May 28 – 1st T20I (Lahore)
- May 30 – 2nd T20I (Lahore)
- May 31 – 3rd T20I (Lahore)
What’s Next for Bangladesh?
With Nahid Rana opting out, the BCB has yet to announce a replacement for the fast bowler. Meanwhile, Mustafizur Rahman, currently playing in the IPL, is expected to join the squad for the Pakistan series.
