The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has achieved a historic victory in the Assam Panchayat elections, sweeping the polls and leaving the Congress decimated.
Massive Win for NDA
The NDA, comprising the BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), secured 307 out of 397 Zila Parishad seats, while the Congress managed only 62 seats. Other smaller parties and independent candidates won a total of 28 seats.
In the Anchalik Panchayat elections, the NDA won 1,409 out of 2,192 seats, with the Congress securing 122 seats and others winning 41 seats.
Congress Wiped Out in Key Districts
The Congress suffered a major setback in Upper Assam, particularly in Jorhat and Sivasagar, where it failed to win even a single Zila Parishad seat. These districts fall under the Jorhat Parliamentary constituency, represented by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, making the loss even more significant.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Sets 95-Seat Target for 2026 Assembly Elections
Buoyed by the results, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence that the NDA would win around 95 of the 126 seats in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.
“Towns and cities have been our strongholds traditionally. Now, we have performed very well in villages. There is a strong possibility that we will win around 95 seats in Assembly elections,” Sarma stated.
High Voter Turnout and Political Implications
The elections were held in two phases on May 2 and 7, across 27 districts, with an impressive 74% voter turnout. Political analysts view this as a semi-final ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, indicating strong public support for the NDA.
BJP Calls Victory a Mandate for Development
State BJP President Dilip Saikia termed the outcome as a victory for development and progress, stating that people voted to accelerate the momentum of progress under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership.
With the Congress struggling to regain ground, the NDA’s dominance in Assam’s rural politics sets the stage for a high-stakes battle in the 2026 Assembly elections.
