Neeta Lulla Reveals Overnight Rush to Create Aishwarya Rai’s Iconic ‘Devdas’ Climax Saree After Bhansali’s Last-Minute Change

Nothing 10 3

In a fascinating behind-the-scenes revelation, acclaimed costume designer Neeta Lulla has shared how she had to create Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s saree for the climax of Devdas overnight, following a sudden creative request from director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

A Cinematic Vision Sparks a Midnight Mission

Speaking to News18, Lulla recalled that just hours before filming the emotional climax scene—where Paro (Aishwarya) runs through the haveli—Bhansali decided the saree’s pallu needed to be longer so it could catch fire more dramatically on screen.

“I had only overnight to create that look,” Lulla said, explaining how she cut up multiple sarees, sourced fabric from a vendor who opened his shop at 11 PM, and directed her team to embroider and assemble two 13-metre sarees by 8:30 AM the next morning.

A Defining Moment in Costume Design

The result was one of the most visually iconic moments in Indian cinema, contributing to Devdas winning five National Film Awards, including one for Best Costume Design. The saree’s dramatic pallu, which catches fire as Paro races to see Devdas one last time, remains etched in cinematic memory.

Legacy of Devdas and Neeta Lulla’s Craftsmanship

Released in 2002, Devdas starred Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit, and was lauded for its opulence and emotional depth. Lulla’s dedication to Bhansali’s vision under pressure is now being celebrated as a testament to the craft and chaos behind timeless storytelling.
