Pujara Reflects on 2022 Birmingham Defeat, Says Conditions Different This Time

Nothing 29 9

Veteran Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara has revisited the painful memory of India’s 2022 Test loss to England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, acknowledging that the team will carry that experience into their current campaign—but with a fresh perspective. Speaking during his commentary stint with BBC TMS, Pujara noted that while the 2022 defeat still lingers, “the pitch and conditions are a bit different this time.”

2022 Heartbreak Still Fresh

India had set England a target of 378 runs in the final innings of the 2022 Test, only to watch Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow chase it down with commanding centuries. England wrapped up the chase in just 79 overs, exposing India’s bowling vulnerabilities. Pujara admitted that the loss would still be on the minds of players like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj, who struggled to contain the English batters during that match.

“Time Factor Is Different Now”

Pujara pointed out that the current Test presents a different scenario. “In that game, there was enough time for England to chase the total down,” he said. “This time, there’s a bit of rain around, and not much time left in the game.” He emphasized that India would aim to set a 400-plus target quickly, giving themselves a chance to bowl England out in the limited time available.

Looking Ahead with Caution and Confidence

With India already 320 runs ahead, Pujara believes the team is in a strong position but must remain cautious. The second new ball could either accelerate scoring or trigger a collapse, depending on how the batters handle the pressure.

As India eyes redemption at the same venue, Pujara’s reflections serve as both a reminder of past lessons and a signal of renewed intent.
