Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming thriller “Nikita Roy”, has weighed in on the growing trend of middle-class families opting out of the theatre experience. In a candid interview, the actress emphasized that the issue isn’t a lack of family-friendly films—but rather the rising cost of movie outings and the abundance of at-home entertainment options.

🎟️ “It’s Not the Films, It’s the Experience”

“I don’t think family stories are missing at all. I feel families are not going—that’s a different story,” Sonakshi told IANS. “There is no lack of films being made, and there is no lack of family films being made. I just feel that content-wise, there are a lot more options. Also, the theatre-going experience has become very expensive for a regular family”.

The actress pointed out that while compelling stories are still being told, the cost of tickets, snacks, and travel has made cinema outings less accessible for average households.

📺 OTT Boom and Changing Viewing Habits

With the rise of affordable streaming platforms, families now have a wide array of content at their fingertips. Sonakshi acknowledged that this shift in consumption habits has made it harder for theatrical releases to draw in large family audiences.

🎬 ‘Nikita Roy’ Aims to Bring Families Back

Despite the challenges, Sonakshi remains optimistic about the power of cinema. She believes her upcoming film Nikita Roy offers the kind of “community viewing experience” that can reignite interest in the big screen.

“It’s a film you enjoy with your friends and family. You get the thrills, the chills, and the entertainment value that a theatrical release should offer,” she said.

Directed by Kussh Sinha, the film stars Sonakshi in the titular role alongside Paresh Rawal, Arjun Rampal, and Suhail Nayyar, and is set to release on June 27, 2025.
