Filmmaker SS Rajamouli is once again pushing cinematic boundaries with his upcoming magnum opus SSMB29, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The latest buzz reveals that Rajamouli has constructed a lavish ₹50 crore Varanasi set at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad, making it one of the most expensive film sets in Indian cinema history.
🛕 A Sacred City Reimagined
The set meticulously recreates the ghats, temples, and riverfronts of Varanasi, drawing inspiration from Nagara-style architecture with towering spires and intricate carvings. Rajamouli is collaborating with historians and temple architecture experts to ensure authenticity, while Hollywood VFX studios have been roped in to blend the physical set with high-end green screen technology, promising a visually immersive experience.
🎬 Why Not Shoot in Varanasi?
Though the team considered filming on location, logistical challenges and crowd control concerns led Rajamouli to opt for a controlled studio environment. The set will host key action sequences featuring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, who returns to Indian cinema after a six-year hiatus.
🌍 Global Scale, Mythical Story
SSMB29 is reportedly a two-part fantasy drama inspired by Indian mythology, with the first installment slated for release in 2027, followed by the second in 2029. The film is said to revolve around Lord Hanuman’s search for the Sanjivani Booti, blending spiritual themes with Rajamouli’s signature cinematic grandeur.
