Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has strongly advocated for Jasprit Bumrah to take over as India’s Test captain, dismissing concerns about the pacer’s workload.
Gavaskar’s Argument for Bumrah’s Leadership
Speaking on Sports Today, Gavaskar emphasized that Bumrah himself is best suited to manage his workload, stating:
“Who better to know what the workload is for himself than himself? If you appoint somebody else, they would always want an extra over from Bumrah. If he is your No. 1 bowler, he will himself know, ‘yes, this is the time I must take a break’.”
Selectors Leaning Toward Shubman Gill
While reports suggest that Shubman Gill is the frontrunner for the Test captaincy, Gavaskar believes Bumrah’s experience and self-awareness make him the ideal choice.
Bumrah’s Past Captaincy Experience
Bumrah has previously led India in Test matches, including the 2022 Edgbaston Test against England and the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth, where India secured a famous win.
Gavaskar’s Final Verdict
Gavaskar insists that giving Bumrah the captaincy would allow him to manage his bowling spells effectively, preventing injuries and ensuring peak performance.
With India set to announce its new Test captain ahead of the England series, Gavaskar’s endorsement adds weight to the ongoing debate over India’s leadership transition.
