The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah’s controversial remarks about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a decorated Indian Army officer. The party has demanded Shah’s immediate dismissal, calling his statement a “vile communal slur” that insults India’s armed forces.
TMC’s Condemnation & Political Fallout
TMC leaders took to social media, questioning whether BJP’s definition of nationalism includes targeting military officers based on their identity. The party stated:
“While the entire nation takes pride in Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a BJP minister brands her the ‘sister of terrorists.’ Is this BJP’s definition of patriotism?”
TMC MP Sagarika Ghose also criticized the National Commission for Women (NCW) for failing to name Shah in its condemnation, urging the commission to “stop being a Sarkari body”.
Legal Action & Public Outrage
Following nationwide backlash, the Madhya Pradesh High Court directed police to file an FIR against Shah, citing prima facie violations under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The court expressed concerns over the police’s handling of the case, stating that the FIR was “drafted in a casual manner” and lacked essential details.
BJP’s Response & Minister’s Apology
While Madhya Pradesh BJP chief VD Sharma acknowledged the controversy, he remained silent on disciplinary action, stating only that Shah had been warned. Facing mounting pressure, Shah later apologized publicly, saying:
“I am not a God; I’m human, and I apologize ten times if my remarks hurt anyone”.
Impact on BJP & National Politics
The incident has sparked debate over BJP’s stance on patriotism, with opposition parties accusing the ruling party of enabling misogynistic and communal rhetoric. Analysts believe the controversy could impact BJP’s image ahead of upcoming elections.
