In a significant road safety milestone, Tripura has recorded a 34% decline in road accident fatalities, thanks to a series of targeted interventions by the state government. The announcement was made by Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury during a recent meeting of the State Road Safety Council.
🚦 Strategic Measures Behind the Decline
The state’s success stems from a multi-pronged approach that includes:
- Enhanced traffic surveillance using interceptor vehicles and speed-monitoring equipment
- Public awareness campaigns across 25 colleges focusing on road safety, drug abuse, and consumer protection
- Strict enforcement against speeding, drunk driving, and traffic violations
- Good Samaritan incentives, offering ₹5,000 to individuals who assist accident victims promptly
“Our goal is zero fatalities. This 34% drop is a step in the right direction,” said Chowdhury, crediting the Tripura Police and traffic wing for their proactive efforts.
🏥 Cashless Treatment Scheme in the Pipeline
The state is also preparing to roll out a central government-backed cashless treatment scheme for accident victims, offering up to ₹1.5 lakh in medical coverage at empaneled hospitals. Operational details are being finalized in coordination with the Centre.
📉 Road Accident Snapshot
- Annual Accidents: ~750
- Previous Fatalities: ~250
- Current Fatalities: ~165 (approximate, based on 34% drop)
The Supreme Court’s Road Safety Committee had earlier directed states to reduce accident deaths by 10% annually. Tripura has exceeded that benchmark, achieving a 13% drop in 2024 alone, and now a cumulative 34% reduction over recent years.
