In a landmark achievement for India’s northeastern region, Tripura has officially been declared a fully literate state, joining Mizoram and Goa as the only states to cross the 95% literacy threshold set by the Government of India. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at a celebratory event held at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan in Agartala.
📚 Literacy Milestone Backed by ULLAS Campaign
According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023–24, Tripura’s literacy rate rose from 93.7% to 95.6%, qualifying it for the “fully literate” status. This success is attributed to the ULLAS – New India Literacy Programme, launched in 2022 under the National Education Policy 2020, which focuses on functional literacy, including digital skills, financial awareness, and basic education.
“This is a revolutionary social achievement that reflects Tripura’s unwavering commitment to inclusive education,” said CM Saha.
👥 Community-Driven Literacy Model
The campaign mobilized:
- 2,228 volunteer teachers
- 943 Social Awareness Centers
- Youth Literacy Corps
- Educational materials in Bengali, English, and Kokborok
From backyard classrooms to hill market literacy sessions, the initiative reached even the remotest corners of the state.
🧭 A Journey from 20% to 95.6%
Tripura’s literacy rate was just 20.24% in 1961. By the 2011 Census, it had climbed to 87.22%, ranking third after Kerala and Mizoram. The latest milestone reflects decades of sustained effort and a shift from basic signature literacy to lifelong learning and empowerment.
