Tripura LoP Expresses Hope for Maitri Setu Opening Despite Lack of Dialogue with Bangladesh

Nothing 9 4

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Tripura Assembly, Jitendra Chaudhury, has expressed optimism about the operationalization of Maitri Setu, a key bridge connecting Sabroom in South Tripura with Ramgarh in Bangladesh. However, he acknowledged that no dialogue is currently possible between India and Bangladesh due to the political situation in Dhaka.

Maitri Setu: A Gateway to Regional Trade

The 1.9-km Maitri Setu, inaugurated in March 2021, was built at a cost of ₹133 crore to enhance trade and connectivity between India and Bangladesh. The bridge, located 72 km from Chittagong Port, is expected to boost economic ties and facilitate cross-border movement of goods and people.

Challenges in Operationalizing the Bridge

Despite its strategic importance, Maitri Setu remains non-operational, with Chaudhury blaming the BJP-led state government for failing to convince the Centre about its significance. He alleged that the previous Left Front government had initiated the project based on public demand, but the current administration has shown a lackadaisical attitude toward its completion.

Political and Trade Implications

Chaudhury also pointed out that anti-India sentiments in Bangladesh and recent border tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack have further delayed the bridge’s opening. He suggested that the import restrictions on Bangladeshi goods imposed by India might be a temporary measure in response to the regional security situation.

Conclusion

While the Maitri Setu project holds immense potential for economic growth and regional connectivity, its operationalization remains uncertain due to political and diplomatic hurdles. As Tripura’s opposition leader continues to push for its opening, the bridge’s future depends on India-Bangladesh relations and policy decisions at the central level.
