In a landmark move for Tripura’s tourism sector, the state government has signed a lease agreement with Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the hospitality arm of the Tata Group, to convert the 100-year-old Pushpabanta Palace into a five-star heritage hotel.

Historic Transformation of Pushpabanta Palace

Built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Bahadur, the Pushpabanta Palace once served as the Governor’s House until 2018. The palace, spanning 7.78 acres, will now be developed into a luxury Taj hotel, featuring 100 royal-themed rooms, a banquet hall, a wellness center, and signature suites reflecting Tripura’s rich heritage.

Boost to Tourism and Employment

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha hailed the agreement as a historic achievement, emphasizing that the project will generate over 200 jobs and attract international tourists. The initiative aligns with the state’s vision to position Tripura as a premier heritage destination.

Challenges Overcome in Finalizing the Deal

Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury acknowledged the hurdles faced in securing the lease, including initial objections from royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, leader of Tipra Motha, an ally of the ruling BJP. However, through dialogue and negotiations, the government successfully finalized the agreement.

Conclusion

The Pushpabanta Palace transformation marks a new era for Tripura’s tourism industry, reinforcing its cultural and historical significance. As the IHCL-led restoration progresses, the state is set to emerge as a luxury travel hotspot in the Northeast.
