In a historic moment for wildlife conservation, Tripura’s Sepahijala Zoo has welcomed the birth of three tiger cubs, marking the first such event in the zoo’s 53-year history. The arrival of these cubs has increased the zoo’s tiger population to five, bringing joy to wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists alike.

A Milestone for Sepahijala Zoo

The cubs were born on May 11, 2025, to a tigress that was brought to the zoo from West Bengal as part of an animal exchange program in February 2024. Zoo officials have confirmed that the mother and cubs are healthy, with round-the-clock monitoring through 11 CCTV cameras to ensure their well-being.

Protective Measures & Care

To prevent disturbances, the male tiger has been moved to a separate enclosure, and visitor access to the cubs has been restricted. The tigress is being provided with balanced nutrition, including fresh meat and soup, to ensure adequate milk supply for the cubs.

Government’s Commitment to Conservation

Tripura’s Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma hailed the birth of the cubs as a positive sign for tiger conservation efforts. He emphasized the state’s commitment to developing Sepahijala Zoo into a world-class facility, seeking support from the Central Zoo Authority for further improvements.

Growing Interest in Wildlife Tourism

Sepahijala Zoo, located 35 km south of Agartala, has been a major attraction for wildlife lovers. In 2024-25, the zoo recorded 1.70 lakh visitors, and the birth of these cubs is expected to further boost eco-tourism in Tripura.
