Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde marked International Yoga Day with a political twist, referring to his 2022 rebellion against the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena as a “bada yoga” (big yoga) that reshaped the state’s political landscape.
Speaking to ANI, Shinde said,
“21 taarikh ko hi humne bada Yoga kiya tha (We did a big yoga on the 21st),”
referring to the day his faction split from the original Shiv Sena, leading to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.
🧘♂️ Political Realignment as ‘Marathon Yoga’
Shinde described the split as a “marathon yoga” that began in Mumbai and, in his words, brought political stability and development to Maharashtra. He credited the current government’s progress to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
🗣️ Subtle Dig at Uddhav Thackeray
While extending greetings on Yoga Day, Shinde took a veiled swipe at Uddhav Thackeray, suggesting that the 2022 split was necessary to uphold the ideals of Balasaheb Thackeray. The two factions—Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Uddhav’s Shiv Sena (UBT)—have remained locked in a bitter feud since the split.
🌍 Yoga Day and National Pride
Shinde also praised PM Modi for taking yoga to the global stage, saying,
“Due to PM Modi’s efforts, the UN has recognised Yoga Day. He performs yoga daily, which keeps him fit and enables him to strengthen the country and its economy.”
He further linked the spirit of yoga to India’s assertive global posture, referencing Operation Sindoor, a recent military operation that showcased India’s strategic strength.
