Wetland Conservation Key to Tackling Urban Floods: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Nothing 33 1

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has emphasized that wetland conservation is crucial for mitigating urban flooding, particularly in flood-prone areas like Silchar. During his visit to Cachar district, Sarma highlighted the environmental risks posed by wetland depletion and called for long-term policy measures to address the crisis.

🔴 Why Wetlands Matter in Flood Control:

  • Wetlands act as natural drainage basins, absorbing excess rainwater and preventing urban flooding.
  • Encroachment and depletion of wetlands worsen flood situations, leading to water stagnation.
  • Restoring wetlands like Malini Beel, Maheesha Beel, Rangirkhaal, and Singerkhal can significantly reduce flood risks in Silchar.

📢 Government’s Action Plan:

  • Installation of 10 water pumps to drain floodwaters in Silchar.
  • Proposal for a dedicated pumping station to improve drainage infrastructure.
  • Strict monitoring of embankments to prevent breaches.

Sarma assured flood-affected residents that relief efforts are ongoing, with essential supplies and medical aid being provided in relief camps. He reiterated that wetland conservation must be prioritized to prevent future urban flooding disasters.
