YouTuber Builds Open-Source Laptop That Boots Faster Than a MacBook

Nothing 69 2

In a remarkable feat of DIY engineering, high school student and YouTuber Byran Huang has built a fully functional open-source laptop from scratch—and it boots three seconds faster than his own MacBook Pro. Dubbed “anyon_e”, the project has taken the tech world by storm for its sleek design, powerful specs, and complete transparency.

A Laptop Built from the Ground Up

Huang’s creation features a Rockchip RK3588 SoC, a 13.3-inch 4K AMOLED display, and a detachable wireless mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX switches. The laptop also includes 16GB LPDDR4X RAM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and a 7-hour battery life—all packed into a CNC-machined aluminum chassis under 18mm thick.

Open-Source and Ultra-Customizable

Every component—from the motherboard to the firmware—is open-source, allowing tech enthusiasts to replicate or modify the build. Huang used Ubuntu-Rockchip and Armbian distributions, and even reverse-engineered display drivers to support the high-resolution AMOLED panel.

Performance That Rivals Premium Devices

Despite being a solo project, the anyon_e laptop can run modern games, AI workloads, and even large language models. Its boot time outpaces commercial laptops, including Apple’s MacBook Pro, making it a standout in both performance and innovation.

A New Era of DIY Computing

The project not only showcases the potential of open-source hardware but also inspires a new generation of makers. Huang’s detailed documentation and GitHub repository make it accessible for anyone with the skills and determination to build their own high-performance laptop.
