Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has taken a sharp swipe at Pakistan for its earlier move to nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, calling the decision ironic and embarrassing in light of the recent US airstrikes on Iran.
🛑 Mufti’s Scathing Critique
In a post on social media platform X, Mufti wrote:
“Country that rushed to recommend Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize now finds itself with egg on its face after he attacked Iran.”
She further criticized the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for offering only “lip service” in response to the strikes, and expressed disappointment over India’s silence, suggesting it appeared to be “aligning with the aggressor”.
💣 Background: Pakistan’s Nobel Nomination for Trump
Earlier this year, Pakistan’s government had formally recommended Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The move was widely mocked online, especially after Trump authorized Operation Midnight Hammer, targeting Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites.
🌍 Online Backlash and Regional Irony
Mufti’s remarks echoed a broader sentiment across social media, where users and commentators from Pakistan and beyond criticized the nomination as “cringe-worthy”, “desperate”, and “hypocritical”. Many pointed out the contradiction of nominating a leader who has supported military aggression in Gaza and Iran.
