Veteran actor Prakash Raj has strongly opposed the ban on the upcoming Hindi film ‘Abir Gulaal,’ starring Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor, calling it an example of growing intolerance in the film industry.

The film, directed by Aarti S Bagdi, was set to release on May 9 but was halted following the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. The decision to block its release has sparked debates on artistic freedom and political interference in cinema.

In an interview, Prakash Raj stated, “I am against banning any film unless it involves child abuse or pornography. Let people watch and decide for themselves.” He criticized the trend of films facing censorship due to political pressure, citing past controversies surrounding ‘Padmaavat,’ ‘Pathaan,’ and ‘L2: Empuraan.’

Raj further argued that fear-driven censorship is stifling creativity, stating, “The present power is allowing this to happen. They are creating fear so that artists begin to self-censor.” He warned that excessive control over cinema could discourage filmmakers from exploring bold narratives.

The ban on ‘Abir Gulaal’ has reignited discussions on freedom of expression in Indian cinema, with many questioning whether political sensitivities should dictate artistic releases.
