Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, has filed a ₹10 crore defamation case against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, not Mira Borthakur, over allegations related to a central government subsidy granted to her company under the PM Kisan Sampada Yojana.
What Sparked the Legal Action?
Gogoi had alleged that Riniki Bhuyan’s firm received a ₹10 crore credit-linked subsidy from the Centre, suggesting misuse of political influence. He cited documents from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and a Parliamentary reply by Minister Piyush Goyal to support his claim.
In response, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma called the allegations “false and slanderous”, stating that neither she nor her company had received or claimed any such subsidy. She emphasized that the accusations were an attempt to malign a 17-year-old Assamese enterprise led by a woman entrepreneur.
“To protect the reputation of our hardworking employees from this slanderous campaign, I am constrained to file a defamation case,” she said in a public statement.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Clarification
The Chief Minister also took to social media, asserting that no funds were received and challenging anyone to prove otherwise.
“If anyone can provide evidence to the contrary, I am willing to accept any punishment including retirement from public life,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Legal Proceedings
The defamation suit was filed in the Court of Civil Judge (Senior Division), Kamrup (Metro), Guwahati, seeking ₹10 crore in damages. The case has intensified the political face-off between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Assam.
