Switzerland, US in Diplomatic Talks as F-35 Jet Price Dispute Threatens $7.4 Billion Deal

Nothing 93 1

Switzerland has entered diplomatic negotiations with the United States after a pricing dispute emerged over its $7.4 billion deal to procure 36 F-35A fighter jets from Lockheed Martin, raising concerns over cost overruns and contractual clarity.

🇨🇭 Fixed Price or Misunderstanding?

Originally signed in 2022, the agreement was based on a fixed price of 6 billion Swiss francs (~$7.4 billion). However, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) recently informed Swiss authorities that the price could rise by $650 million to $1.3 billion, citing inflation, raw material costs, and energy price surges.

Swiss officials, including National Armaments Director Urs Loher, insist the fixed price was clearly agreed upon and publicly confirmed by the US Embassy in Bern.

“A contract is a contract,” Loher stated, expressing frustration over the sudden shift in terms.

🛩️ Strategic Stakes and Political Fallout

The F-35A was selected in 2021 over European rivals like the Eurofighter, Rafale, and F/A-18 Super Hornet, despite domestic opposition branding it an unnecessary “Ferrari” for a neutral nation. Critics argue that Switzerland’s compact airspace doesn’t require such advanced jets.

Still, the government maintains that cancelling the deal would jeopardize national security, as the current F/A-18 fleet will retire by 2032.

🕊️ Seeking a Diplomatic Resolution

With legal arbitration ruled out by the contract terms, Swiss Defence Minister Martin Pfister confirmed that talks are underway with US counterparts.

“We believe the US also has an interest in being seen as a reliable contractual partner,” he said, while acknowledging that cancellation remains a last resort.

The dispute has reignited political debate in Switzerland, with some lawmakers calling for a parliamentary review or even a referendum on the procurement.
