Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Lina Khan issued a stern warning on Tuesday, stating that the rapid proliferation of generative artificial intelligence tools—such as ChatGPT—threatens to significantly increase the frequency and severity of consumer fraud and scams across the United States. During a public briefing, Khan and other commission members emphasized that while the technology is nascent, the agency possesses the necessary legal authority to aggressively regulate AI-driven harms under existing consumer protection mandates.

The Rising Threat of AI Manipulation

The core concern voiced by the FTC is the ability of generative AI to lower the barrier to entry for bad actors. Historically, sophisticated fraud schemes required significant time, coordination, and resources to execute effectively.

Today, AI tools allow scammers to generate hyper-realistic phishing emails, simulate the voices of loved ones, and create convincing deepfake imagery with minimal effort. This industrialization of deception makes it increasingly difficult for the average consumer to distinguish between legitimate communication and malicious attempts to steal personal data or finances.
