A New Era for Indian Aerospace

The first C-295 military transport aircraft manufactured entirely on Indian soil successfully completed its maiden test flight in Vadodara, Gujarat, on Wednesday. This landmark event represents a significant leap forward for the nation’s ‘Make in India‘ initiative, marking the first time an Airbus-designed tactical transport plane has been assembled outside of Spain. The flight, which lasted approximately three hours, confirmed the operational readiness of the final assembly line facility established through a strategic partnership between Airbus Defence and Space and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).

Context of the C-295 Program

The C-295 program was initiated to replace the aging Avro-748 fleet currently operated by the Indian Air Force. In September 2021, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract worth ₹21,935 crore with Airbus for the procurement of 56 aircraft. Under the terms of the agreement, the first 16 planes were to be delivered directly from the Airbus facility in Seville, Spain, in ‘fly-away’ condition. The remaining 40 aircraft are designated for domestic production at the Vadodara facility, fostering local industrial capacity and technological transfer.

Technical Capabilities and Strategic Impact

The C-295 is a versatile, next-generation tactical airlifter known for its ability to operate from short, unprepared airstrips. It is capable of carrying up to nine tonnes of payload or 71 troops, making it an essential asset for logistics, disaster relief, and maritime patrol missions. By localizing the production of such a sophisticated platform, India aims to reduce its dependency on foreign imports while establishing a robust domestic aerospace ecosystem.
