A New Era for Indian Aerospace
The first C-295 military transport aircraft manufactured entirely on Indian soil successfully completed its maiden test flight in Vadodara, Gujarat, on Wednesday. This landmark event represents a significant leap forward for the nation’s ‘Make in India‘ initiative, marking the first time an Airbus-designed tactical transport plane has been assembled outside of Spain. In September 2021, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract worth ₹21,935 crore with Airbus for the procurement of 56 aircraft. Under the terms of the agreement, the first 16 planes were to be delivered directly from the Airbus facility in Seville, Spain, in ‘fly-away’ condition. The remaining 40 aircraft are designated for domestic production at the Vadodara facility, fostering local industrial capacity and technological transfer.
