In a major step toward plastic waste reduction, the Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat in Tripura’s Dhalai district has introduced biodegradable PBAT bags, offering an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastics.
Eco-Friendly Innovation: PBAT Bags
The newly launched bags are made from Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate (PBAT), a biodegradable and chemical-free polymer certified by the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET). Unlike conventional plastic bags that persist in the environment for centuries, PBAT bags decompose within 180 days, making them a sustainable choice for consumers.
Affordable and Accessible Green Solution
Priced at ₹145 per kg (wholesale) and ₹160 per kg (retail), the bags are designed to be cost-effective for both vendors and consumers. The initiative aligns with the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, promoting reuse, recycling, and recovery to tackle plastic pollution.
Community Engagement and Awareness Campaigns
The Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat has also launched extensive outreach programs to educate locals on responsible plastic use and waste management. Officials emphasize that the project is not just a policy but a grassroots movement driven by the principles of Swabhav, Swachhata, and Sanskar.
Conclusion
With Kamalpur taking the lead in plastic-free initiatives, Tripura is setting an example for sustainable urban development. As India accelerates its circular economy efforts, this initiative stands out as a beacon of local leadership in the fight against plastic pollution.
